Traditional Elements for Gardens
June 25, 2024
Continuing our exploration of outdoor design trends identified by The New York Design Center, we explore how traditional elements for gardens are on trend and how this is being driven by a resurgence in the popularity for traditional architectural styles in the garden in 2024. “There seems to be a renewed romance with classical architecture and architectural details in outdoor design,” said Kristen Rivoli of Kristen Rivoli Interior Design. “It looks so beautiful in a lush, green landscape with some modern sculpture thrown in for good balance.” We heartily agree, as you can see from our array of offerings that tick this box.
Traditional Elements for Gardens
The Hatfield Bench, which is a bestseller, is a traditional English garden design made of concrete in a Portland finish. This treatment adds the illusion of age to this cement bench with British character and American roots. Our concrete furnishings line has expanded greatly over the years so be sure to search for others if this is not your style.
The Ophelia Vintage Terra Large Planter, which is new, is made of composite with an antique sand finish on its surface to bring the tan planter an antique feel. The traditional shape with its undersized handles enhances the ruse that it is old and the fact they are made from composite makes them easier to move around. The dry, washed finish brings the pot an uptick in texture. The Ophelia has a drain hole, though the vessel does not come with a plug. We also offer the Ophelia in a medium size in terra, and in large and medium sizes in brown.
The Leagrave Chair is a bestseller, as are the large and small benches in the family. It is sturdier than its teak counterparts. Made of concrete, this beautifully substantial, outdoor-friendly cement chair in a Portland finish has a patina that will mellow with age. This makes the tan chair as timeless in style as its predecessors.
Mediterranean-inspired elements are plentiful in the classically designed outdoor space. The Sicilia Small Antique Blue Drip Planter has strong stylistic notes that represent the time-honored vibe. Inspired by classic shapes that have been staples in Italian gardens for centuries, the blue planter has pitting in its terracotta surface to create the ruse that it, too, has been tucked away in the landscape for ions.
We are known for producing sturdy concrete furniture with outside-the-box style. Many of our garden pieces are based on time-honored designs of wooden garden furniture but with an added longevity given the material. The Colesden Bench, which is a bestseller, is one of these pieces in a dark gray finish.
The Woodland Bench, one of our bestsellers, is created by artisans who hand-apply the concrete over a metal frame and then sculpt it into the appearance of tree branches. The rustic yet transitional style of this faux bois bench allows it to move seamlessly from indoor settings to the outdoors. The Woodland family of furniture in a faux bois finish includes several pieces, including an armchair.
The Relic Accent Table, which is new, flaunts its name with its pitted surface that looks as if it has weathered centuries of climate. Made by a talented group of artisans who live on the border of Burma and Thailand, the beige accent table is the epitome of handcrafted. The ivory white moss glazing on the side table is an artisanal touch, as it appears pale in some spots and darker in others.
The Elwynn Small Bench, which is a bestseller, appears to be growing up from the ground. The heavy concrete construction of this faux bois bench makes a fantastic addition to a garden or to other outdoor and indoor spaces. Its length can comfortably seat two people. We also offer the Elwynn as a large bench.
The Creekside Console Table has flowing twig-like details that were realized with faux bois construction techniques. The graceful branching profile makes this table in a faux bois natural finish a veritable sculpture in a space, be it indoors or out. We also offer the Creekside as a bench.
Bring the garden indoors (or enhance outdoor spaces) with the Cinisi Large Antique Blue Drip Planter with its strong Mediterranean vibe. Inspired by classic shapes that have been staples in Italian gardens for centuries, the blue planter has pitting in its terracotta surface to create the feel that it, too, has been tucked away in the landscape for ions.
The Countryhouse Coat Rack is one of our faux bois accessories that illustrates how bringing concrete furniture indoors is a clever idea. When the gray coat tree in a natural faux bois finish isn't hung with coats, it's a lithe sculpture that will bring the feeling of nature indoors.
In the time-honored artistry of French faux bois, the base of the Faux Bois Cocktail Table is fashioned to resemble an aged tree that gracefully angles up to its top to convince the eye that nature created it. Durability is built into this faux bois table's DNA. The mix of lighter Portland and dark acid concrete finishes bring this creation ample texture, as do the life rings carved into its top.
Mimicking the time-worn feel of a piece of architectural salvage, the Pagoda Hexagonal Table has a steel frame covered in gray concrete. It's the wire-combed surface that provides this brown stool with a naturally textured finish. This is one of our pieces that will bring the feeling of age to a space.
Nothing can be more traditional out-of-doors than faux bois planters: We have offerings in square, rectangular (a bestseller), small round, and medium round, and large round.
Starting New Traditions
As everyone enjoys their outdoor spaces this summer, we hope they bring each of you the joy we imagine they can. Turning to our Vice President/Creative Director Cecil Adams again this week, who put together his trend predictions for 2024 into 2025 earlier this year, he notes how the focus on indoor/outdoor living in all style categories will continue to be a hot topic for the months to come.
